Game Genres

Compare of different genre maps

This Battlefield 1 map is more open what is good for sniping, but it has areas of close corners you like to see in fps for fast pace  action. You can tell is it a FPS game by the setting and destruction in the map, like trenches and the placement of tanks, planes and horses giving a sense of war. On the map you can see your squad what is indicated by the green arrows, and your team by blue arrows. The map is very important in fps, as it can give you info on enemy’s positions, objective points and etc.

Arma 3 map is an open world map meaning anything you see on the map you can go there. The map is 270 km2   meaning the map is huge. The map is made for simulation/Tactical Shooter as you can tell by the size of the map giving it a more realistic feel you would want to feel in a simulation game. This means you will not see a lot of actions if not that many people are on the server, as it's so huge.

Game Genres

FPS

Modern Warfare 3 (MW3, 8 November 2011,  Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software) is a FPS. You can first tell this by the first person perspective of the character as he is looking down at his gun. This is not the only way you could get an indication of it being a FPS, you could maybe tell by the mini map in the top left showing it's a small map what looks like it's been destroyed/abandoned. The graphic style of this game is high as the game is still trying to make the gamer emerged.

( Portal, 9 October 2007, Valve Corporation) You can tell portal is a puzzle game because of it's level based system as well of things you have to figure out to get to the next level. Also having to use your teleporting guns to get items to certain places to open doors.

The graphic style of this game is very simple and just focuses on the puzzles in the game.

Simualtion

Euro Truck Simulator 2 ( EST2, 19 October 2012, SCS Software) The reason Euro truck simulator 2 is a simulator game is because it's trying to imitate and immerse the player as much as possible. The game uses real roads, motorways to make it feel real as possible. The graphics style of this game will be realistic as they are trying to simulate the real thing and want the environment to look real.

Different Genre of Games

Counter Strike ( Counter-Strike Global Offensive (CS:GO), 21 August 2012, Valve Corporation)

The reason for CSGO being a first person shooter game is due to the mechanics and position of the camera. The camera is placed where the characters eye would be giving their perspective and as it's a first person shooter the character is normally looking down at a gun or some sort of weapon.

Arma 3 ( Arma 3, 12 September 2013, Bohemia Interactive) The reason for Arma 3 is a simulation game is that it tries to be realistic as possible, they do this by making the maps huge as well as based on real locations and open world, and the detail into player customization and movement works. The game tries to encourage you to plan out your attack with whatever military equipment you need to complete your mission.

Mechanics of CSGO

CSGO (Counter strike global offensive, Valve, 21 August 2012) is a tactical fps game, that uses a lot of different mechanics to make a unique play style of game.

Dynamic Weapon Pricing

CSGO uses dynamic weapon pricing in the game. You start of out $800 on pistol around, and depending if you won or lose you can get different amounts of money. For 1 loss it would be $1400, 2 losses in a row $1900, 3 losses in a row $2400, 4 losses in a row $2900 and 5 losses in a row $3400, then you have any additional money from previous rounds, bomb plants, or kills. A normal rifle setup on the T side is $4700 what includes smoke, flashes, & Molotov’s. A basic CT side setup is $5300 including defuse kit and smokes, flashes, grenades. This add another tactical side as you have to think how you spend your money each round and think ahead of the game.

Compared to other games

This is a unique mechanic for FPS as most games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Rainbow Six, Overwatch, and Titanfall. All this FPS give you the gun that you use at the start of the game, while CSGO you have to build up economy to buy the gun you want.

Recoil

All guns in the Counter-Strike series have a spray pattern, containing the amount of recoil (horizontal and vertical movement) applied to each shot. Crouching does not reduce the amount of recoil and running does not increase it (They increase the weapon's bullet spread however). The first shot fired while spraying is always unaffected by recoil and is completely accurate (however, bullet spread is still in effect).

A commonly utilized tactic is to burst fire for recoil to reduce and maintain accuracy.

Movement

Using the movement buttons, players can move forwards, backwards, and strafe sideways. Speed in games is measured in hammer units.

Bunny Hopping

Bunny hop, or bhop for short, is a jumping technique which a player repeatedly performs strafe jumps. Due to the way the engine works, repeated jumping will conserve the player's momentum, causing the player to continuously accelerate and achieve incredibly high speeds.

Crouch Jumping

Crouch jump is where a player crouches mid-air after jumping. This reduces the hit box size and increases the height of the jump slightly.

Strafe Jumping

Strafe jump is when a player strafes and turns towards the same side mid-air. This allows the player to turn the direction of their jump mid-air, allowing more versatile movements, making the player increase speed in the air

Movement in other games.

These things make movement very different to other FPS like Call of Duty and battlefield. As they only use basic movement controls what is forward, backwards, left, and right.  However in the new Call of Duty they have added in boost, so you can double jump or strafe left and right while in the air to add more skill to movement and not make all the skill about gun play.

The speed at which the player moves is dependent on the player's current equipped weapon - a bulkier and heavier weapon like the AWP will slow down the player, while a smaller and lighter weapon like the Knife will allow the player to move at high speeds. players can use the specific walk key to slow down their movement and reduce their footstep noise.

250 units is the fastest you can go without strafe jumping or bunny hopping.

HitBoxes

In early Counter-Strike games, the boundaries for the individual hitboxes were outside their respective body parts, making the hitboxes larger than the actual model. Starting with the September 15, 2015 update of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive however, the boundaries for the individual hitboxes were placed almost entirely inside their respective body parts by incorporating capsules instead of boxes.

Location Damage
Head 400% (4X)
Chest & Arm 100% (1X)
Stomach 125% (1.25X)
Leg 75% (0.75X)

Ranks

CSGO has a unique ranking system. When you first play the game  you have to reach rank 2 to reach the competitive side of csgo. Once you have reached rank 2 you can play matchmaking competitive what you have to win 10 placement games to achieve a rank. Once you have won 10 placement games you are placed into one of the 18 skill ranks. Based on successes and failures, your rank will be adjusted at the end of each match, assigning you a higher or lower Skill Group if necessary. The ranking system is still unclear on how it exactly works but there are theories about invisible elo etc.

Third party sites

Some games have third party sites what run other servers, game modes etc. For CSGO esea provides better servers having 128tick when valve matchmaking is 64tick. ESEA also has there own ranking system and provides a better experience for competitive players with a monthly fee of £6 a month.

My Assets

This is one of the models i have created for my game (ump45). These are some screenshots i took while making the ump45. While making it i thought it would be easier to make it out of lots of different cubes as i could make adjustments much better and if i changed my mind on something would be easier to change, than if it was was 1 cube.

M16

This is one of the gun models i made for my game. I made it in blender modeling over a picture i found on google while making some changes to the gun to make it more realistic. I made it by adding cube and cylinder then merging them together. I found this was the easiest and best way to get the most detail into the gun model.

Creating My Game

Learning everything i have from this unit, i made a fps action game. I did this by making gun models and researching what made a good fps/action game. I found out that the most popular type of fps action shooter games, are fast pace with small maps and action.

Tutorial Level -

This is the tutorial level for my game i made the map small just to show the player the basic mechanics of the game as well as the objective. For this level i have just made part of a city road and put a enemy in the level as well.
